Homeless camp sparks fire near local business

A local business owner is asking the city to take action after he says a fire broke out near his store over Labor Day weekend because of a homeless camp.

The Fern plant shop and the Lookout are both located just south of the Maple Street bridge.

The owner of both businesses claims that’s where the fire broke out over the weekend.

He says when it comes to the homeless, they are more than understanding. That said, he’s asking the city to take a proactive response, including adding fencing, better lighting, and cameras in the area.

The Spokane Police Department says that area is a location where they do encounter problems associated with homelessness. Drug abuse, malicious mischief and other crimes are often reported from there as well.
