Homeless camp responsible for starting Cheney wildfire
CHENEY, Wash. — The Cheney Police Department says Tuesday’s wildfire was human-caused.
The Mullinix Road fire triggered level three evacuations at the Peaceful Pines RV Park and damaged one building.
High winds whipped up flames on Tuesday as air and ground fire crews worked to get the blaze under control. On Thursday, the Cheney Fire Department said the fire started at a homeless camp near the railroad tracks behind the RV Park.
It’s not a new area for campers, according to North Star Equipment owner Rhonda Elliot. She says two years ago police warned her about homeless camps on her property.
“I think more needs to be done to prevent this kind of thing in the future because a lot of businesses here could have been lost on Tuesday,” said Elliot. “Maybe lives, too.”
Fire officials have not found the people responsible, and warn everyone that a burn ban is still in effect.
