#happylife: What you need to know before bringing the family to the Spokane Lilac Festival Saturday

It’s hard to believe, but it’s that time of year! The Spokane Lilac Festival which culminates with the nation’s largest Armed Forces Torchlight Parade on Saturday night!

Before you bring the kids down to take part in all the excitement, there are some things you should know!

If you are looking to hit the main event, the 2019 Armed Forces Torchlight Parade, be sure to be prepared, as the parade starts at 7:45pm and lasts for nearly 2 hours. Parade organizers suggest dressing warm and packing a blanket or warmer coat. Crowds can be 5 to 10 people deep in some parts along the route, so bring some snacks and water with you. Be sure to keep any backpack or cooler with you at all times though, abandoned items along the route will be confiscated for security purposes.

Like to get the best view? Parade enthusiasts like to set up their lawn chairs extra early – like the night before! While organizers say this is fine and that they will not be removed, they know this isn’t for everyone. Bleacher seats are available for purchase here. If you are still thinking about what you’d like to do, know you can also purchase bleacher seats the day of at the marketing tent, located at Main and Washington.

Be sure to review the street closures and parade route. If your car is parked along the parade route, or the staging areas, you could risk having it towed. There are no designated parking lots for the event, but the Spokane Transit Authority will have special stops for those looking to check out the parade and don’t want to stress about parking.

Want to make a day out of it? From 9am to 4pm, visit Jefferson under the freeway and get an up close view of the floats, as final preparations are made!

There is more to the Lilac Festival than the parade. The Cruizin the Falls Car Show will be happening from 10am to 6pm along Spokane Falls Boulevard. There will also be fun activities for the kids, like bounce houses, in addition to Mobius.

The Lilac Festival Food Truck Rally will also be taking place just prior to the parade. From 11am to 8pm, stop by the Howard Street Bridge in Riverfront Park and enjoy some food before you check out the cars and parade!
