#happylife: A doctor’s warning for parents before booking a sports physical
SPOKANE, Wash. — If your kids play sports, this is definitely something on your back to school list: sports physicals.
One local doctor is urging parents to be cautious when booking the appointment if your child hasn’t already had a wellness visit this year.
It’s because a lot of clinics will bill insurance for a full wellness visit, which is a lot different. At a wellness visit they address your teen as a whole, while at a sports physical they are just checking to make sure they can play sports.
Sports physicals leave out screenings for things like anxiety and depression, which they talk about in annual exams.
Doctor Kathryn Hudon, D.O. with Providence Grand Pediatrics said, “While they are scary and hard questions, we get a lot of people that answer them with affirmative answers and their families never knew about it.”
Dr. Hudon said that you can always get a sports physical at a wellness visit, but not visa versa.
