GU women’s soccer wins 2-0 on Senior Night with a chance for an NCAA tournament bid
SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women’s soccer team (10-3-5, 5-1-3 West Coast Conference) won their final game of the regular season 2-0 at Luger Field.
GU dominated against Portland. They outshot the Pilots 17-13, having 10 more corner kicks than the Pilots. The Zags held possession of the ball for 60 percent of the match. They had 2/3 of that possession on the attacking side of the field.
GU’s Hannah Gray scored a long-distance goal in the 15th minute, the freshman’s third goal of the season.
About 20 minutes later, Paige Alexander scored a corner kick from Willow Collins, her second assist in the game to make it 2-0.
Goalkeeper Lyza Bosselmann got her 20th shutout, which is second all-time in program history. She gave up 13 goals this season, the least in a season for the GU women’s soccer program. The senior gave up only 47 goals in her career, which is also a program record for the fewest amount of goals given up.
Bosselmann, along with nine of her teammates were honored at Senior Night. The Class of 2022 Zags had the highest winning percentage over a four-year span.
Saturday night’s win against Portland matches their best WCC finish in program history. This is the 10th time the program has won 10 games in a season and the fifth time in the last six seasons GU has won 10 games. The only exception was the shortened season in 2021 Spring.
This Zags team had the best conference finish by winning percentage in program history. There is a possibility that this team gets to the NCAA tournament and competes for a national title.
