GU women’s rowing prepares for national championships in Florida

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women’s rowing team now knows what lies ahead for them in the NCAA championships.

The NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Committee announced the full field of teams competing across three events at the  2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Championships.

The Zags will head to Sarasota, Florida, to Nathan Benderson Park May 27-29 to compete for their first rowing title in school history. GU’s eight and second varsity boats (No. 18 seed) will compete in Heat 2, and GU’s varsity four boat (No. 20 seed) will compete in Heat 4.

Being one of 22 teams that qualified, the Zags were one of the 11 teams that automatically qualified for a spot in the national championships. The Zags recently won the its 20th WCC title last week, qualifying for the seventh straight season and eighth time in program history.

GU finished 20th overall at the last rowing championships in 2021. Varsity eight finished first in the D final to finish 19th overall, and second varsity finished fourth to place 22nd overall. Varsity four finished in sixth place to place 18th overall.

Two boats of eight rowers and one boat of four rowers are required for the NCAA championships.

Other teams joining the Zags in Florida include the University of Washington, Oregon State, Stanford and University of California Berkeley.
