Gonzaga student creates petition to get Jimmy Kimmel to speak at commencement
SPOKANE, Wash. — People all across the Inland Northwest are inviting talk show host Jimmy Kimmel to beautiful Spokane after he joked that Gonzaga Universitywas nonexistent.
“I don’t think Gonzaga exists,” Kimmel said on his talk show earlier this week. Kimmel claimed the only time he ever hears about GU is during March Madness.
Tweets and Facebook posts have flooded in since Kimmel made the comment, but one Gonzaga student is taking it even further.
Jake Schmidt, a senior majoring in civil engineering, has organized a Change.org petition to get Kimmel to be this year’s commencement speaker and have him visit the campus for himself.
Schmidt said Kimmel’s comments inspired him to create the petition and to prove how great both Spokane and the Gonzaga community are.
“I’m from Seattle, but I consider this my home,” Schmidt said. “Spokane is great because of its close community and location. Spokane has a small town feel, but has the same opportunities as a larger city.
Schmidt is not aiming for any set number of signatures, but he wants enough to get Kimmel’s attention and let him know he is serious about the offer to speak at graduation.
If you would like to sign the petition, you can do so here.
