Gonzaga clinches No. 2 seed in WCC Tournament with 4-1 win over LMU
LOS ANGELES — After a 4-1 win over Loyola Marymount University, Gonzaga leaves Los Angleles with a series win and secures the second seed in the West Coast Conference Tournament.
On Sunday’s game, Gonzaga used four pitchers. Starter Michael Spellacy held the lions scoreless on three hits over 3.1 innings.
Gonzaga’s offense started hot in the first inning. Troy Johnston sent the Bulldogs first run home with an RBI single. Austin Pinorini added with an RBI sacrifice fly to put the Zags up 2-0.
Freshman Daniel Naughton took over the mound with one on and one out in the fourth. He struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning. He protected the shutout until the sixth inning where he gave up a solo homerun to the Lion’s Trevin Esquerra.
Gonzaga’s offense added two more runs in the seventh inning to increase the lead to 4-1. Mason wells got two outs in the bottom of the inning before Alek Jacob came in to close out the game. Jacob allowed one hit in the remaining 2.1 innings, earning his 11th save.
On Thursday Gonzaga advances to the West Coast Conference Tournament. Gonzaga holds the second seed as they compete in the four teams, double elimination tournament for the league title and automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals.
