Gas line struck by construction crew Riverside and Madison

A construction crew inadvertently struck a gas line near the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes in downtown Spokane, which prompted a response by Spokane fire crews, Avista and a HazMat team.

The incident is happening near the intersection of Riverside and Madison. Eight fire crews are on the scene and Avista is responding to repair the damage done by the construction crew. HazMat crews will be monitoring air quality levels.

The area in the immediate vicinity of the gas line break was shut down and emergency responders asked people to stay in their homes for the time being.

By 3 p.m. Avista crews were able to turn off the gas main and the area was being reopened.
