Game Day Preview: Gonzaga takes on hot-shooting Baylor
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The Bulldogs had no trouble advancing to the second round in Salt Lake, but now they face a ninth-seeded Baylor Bears team with one impressive upset already under their belts.
Baylor took down eighth-seeded Syracuse on Thursday, in a dazzling display of offense by both teams. The Orange scares any team in the NCAA tournament with their matchup 2-3 zone, but the Bears shot 47% from three-point range, making 16, and just under 54% from two.
The Zags will look to limit that, more than likely by matching up man-to-man as they usually do. Yesterday, after their closed practice, every Gonzaga player interviewed described Baylor as big, physical and dangerous. This will no doubt be one of the more physical teams the Zags have faced all year. It will be a fun battle to watch down low, as that physicality will be felt by Rui Hachimura and Brandon Clarke more than anyone else.
The Bears are one of the nation’s best offensive rebounding teams, and are led by Yale transfer Makai Mason at guard, who averages 14.9 points. They have some impressive wins, including two over Iowa State and Texas Tech, but also lost to Texas Southern earlier this season, a team Gonzaga dismantled in 2018.
