First provision of Washington’s new gun law now in effect

The first provision of Washington’s new gun control law goes into effect on New Year’s Day.

Initiative 1639 included several measures and passed with nearly 60 percent of the statewide vote in November.

The restrictions include storage requirements, waiting periods and increased background checks for some gun purchases. Most of the measures go into effect July 1, 2019.

The only part of the initiative to go into effect January 1st is one that raises the age limit for anyone wanting to buy a semi-automatic rifle from 18 to 21.

The initiative was extremely controversial in Washington. Shortly after it was passed, several individuals and the NRA filed a lawsuit to overturn it.

The police chief in Republic, WA made national headlines when he said his department would not enforce any of the measures of I-1639.
