Fire damages apartments in Cheney

Firefighters are battling a fire that broke out at a fourplex Saturday afternoon around 2 p.m. in Cheney near 1st Avenue and Washington Street.

Crews upgraded the fire to a second-alarm fire allowing other firefighting units to respond to the blaze. The Spokane Fire Department is assisting the Cheney Fire Department in extinguishing the flames.

Residents living in the apartments were evacuated and the Red Cross will be aiding those displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
