Father of North Idaho serial killing victims passes away
After years of health issues, the father of several North Idaho children who fell victim to a serial killer has lost his battle with cancer.
Steve Groene was the public face of tragedy in 2005, when three of his children were victimized, two murdered, by Joseph Duncan.
He has two surviving sons, as well as his daughter Shasta, who survived her kidnapping at the hands of Duncan. A family member said Groene was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in November.
Currently, Duncan’s lawyers are fighting to vacate his death sentence, challenging the legality of one of his counts. They argued that his charge of ‘Using a Firearm During and In Relation to a Crime of Violence Resulting in Death’ was unconstitutional, as kidnapping is not considered a crime of violence, federally.
