Evacuations lifted for fire near Crescent Bar

Douglas County fire crews say they’re beginning containment on a wildfire that previously threatened homes and closed a major highway near Crescent Bar Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters say the fire started at about 2:00 p.m. near milepost 18 off of Highway 28. High winds and dry grasses pushed the fire to 1,200 acres in size as of 7:00 Sunday evening.

Emergency management officials say a few homes were evacuated near Crescent Bar at the fire’s peak. Those homeowners were allowed back to their homes Sunday evening.

Thick smoke from the fire closed a stretch of Highway 28 between the Trinidad Rest Area and the Spanish Castle exit. The Washington State Patrol blamed poor visibility from the smoke for causing several crashes on the highway. The highway has since been re-opened.

Firefighters say a number of power poles were destroyed in the fire and that a few customers may be without power for some time.

Crews will be on scene for some time Sunday night mopping up hot spots.
