Erin Popovich, wife of Spurs coach, dies at age 67

The wife of San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has died at the age of 67, the team confirmed Wednesday.

The Spurs didn’t provide further details on the death of Erin Popovich, who had been married to the Spurs coach for four decades. The couple had two children and two grandchildren.

“We mourn the loss of Erin,” Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said in a team statement. “She was a strong, wonderful, kind, intelligent woman who provided love, support and humor to all of us.”

ESPN reported that Erin Popovich had been battling an illness for an extended period.

Gregg Popovich has led the Spurs to five NBA titles since taking over as head coach of the team in 1996. The team currently trails the Golden State Warriors 2-0 in their first-round playoff series with Game 3 set for Thursday night in San Antonio.

Although he led the team’s practice Wednesday, the team announced Thursday that the 69-year-old coach would not be with the team Thursday night. Instead, assistant coach Ettore Messina will coach the team against the Warriors.
