Earl Thomas makes contract holdout official; wants to stay with Seahawks
SEATTLE, Wash. — IT WAS AFTER A WIN OVER DALLAS IN DECEMBER WHEN EARL THOMAS WALKED INTO THE COWBOY’S LOCKER ROOM, JOKING WITH HEAD COACH JASON GARRET, “IF Y’ALL HAVE THE CHANCE, COME GET ME,” THAT SPURRED MONTHS OF OFFSEASON TALK ABOUT THOMAS’S FUTURE IN SEATTLE.
AS HE HEADS INTO THE FINAL YEAR OF HIS CONTRACT, HE’S ALREADY SAID HE WANTS A NEW DEAL. WITHOUT AN EXTENSION, THOMAS WOULD MAKE $10.4 MILLION DOLLARS THIS SEASON AND BECOME AN UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT AFTERWARD.
TODAY THE THE SIX-TME ALL PRO SAFETY SAID HE WILL HOLD OUT FOR MANDATORY MINI-CAMP COMING UP ON JUNE 12.
THROUGH A LENGTHY TWEET, HE MADE CLEAR HE WANTS TO BE A SEAHAWK FOR THE REST OF HIS CAREER. BUT HE ALSO WANTS CERTAINTY IN THE UPCOMING YEARS, AND BELIEVES HIS PRODUCTION ON THE FIELD HAS WARRANTED A CONTRACT EXTENSION. WE’LL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS BUT HE HOPES FOR UNDERSTANDING FROM HIS TEAM MATES AND 12S.
Tweet from Thomas: “I will not be attending the upcoming mini-camp or any team activities until my contract situation is resolved,” he wrote. “I want everyone especially the 12’s to know that I want to remain a Seahawks for the rest of my career, but I also believe that based on my production over the last eight years that I’ve earned the right to have this taken care of as soon as possible. I want to have certainty in regards to the upcoming years of my career. I’m going to continue to work my craft and put in work so that I can add to the team and give us the best chance to win. I hope my teammates understand where I’m coming from. I believe this is the right thing to do.”
