Eag fans flock to FCS Championship watch parties
CHENEY, Wash. — If you’re an Eag fan and you weren’t in Frisco, Texas on Saturday, chances are you were at an Eastern watch party in the Inland Northwest. Dozens of fans packed into Barrelhouse in Cheney, nearly 2,000 miles from the FCS Championship Game to cheer on the Eags against the North Dakota State Bison.
Fans like Wayne Brokaw and Rita Zorrozua stuck with Eastern through the good, the bad and all of those first-half penalties at the party organized by Eastern alumni. Brokaw and Zorrozua have been with the Eags — and in Cheney — through it all.
“This is our home,” Brokaw said. “We came over here in ’78 and we’ve been living the Cheney dream for the last 40 years.”
It’s a dream, they say, that’s only gotten better with time. This season was the perfect example of that.
“Eastern’s come a long ways in the last 40 years, whether it’s basketball or football,” Brokaw said. “It’s exciting just to play. Great game.”
Even though Eastern fell short to the most dominant team in the FCS, fans were still proud to call themselves Eags and to live the “Cheney dream.”
“It’s exciting that our little town of Cheney is on the map,” Brokaw said.
“It’s been a really fun season. It’s been fun to watch everybody get so excited about Eastern and the chance to go to the championship again,” said Pat Spanjer, Eastern’s director of annual giving. “There’s always so much to be proud of. As an alum, I couldn’t be more proud of Eastern.”
