Driver who died in Spokane River identified
POST FALLS, Idaho — The Kootenai County Sheriff’s office has identified the woman who drove her SUV into the Spokane River and died yesterday as Valerie Sandaker, 54, of Bonners Ferry, Idaho.
According to the sheriff’s office, Yesterday, just before 8:00 a.m., Sandaker drove her black 2012 Volkswagen into the Spokane River near Templin’s on the River in Post Falls.
A witness told KXLY4 News that she drove through his yard to reach the river.
The vehicle was completely submerged in nearly 20 feet of water and came to rest on the driver’s side.
The water temperature at the time divers extricated Sandaker from the vehicle was approximately 36 degrees. According to the witness, she had been under the water for more than a hour.
An autopsy was performed to determine the official cause of death.
The final autopsy results, to include toxicology testing, will not be available for several weeks.
