Did you have the day off for New Year’s Day? They didn’t
No days off for local law enforcement and first responders on New Year's Day
SPOKANE, Wash. — You may have had the day off, but police, firefighters and many others have to work this holiday and all the others. For many, the first day of the year is just another day of work.
For most of these folks, it’s out with the holiday spirit and in with the workday grind. You may have heard the term “weekend warriors.” These are your holiday warriors.
January 1, 2020 is more commonly known as New Year’s Day. For many, that means taking a much-needed day off. But not everyone gets the same luxury. Just because it’s a holiday, doesn’t mean the world stops.
We always need brave officers to protect us, firefighters to keep us safe, and someplace to eat.
“Someone’s got to do it,” said Colin Calvert, a server at Veraci Pizza, “[It’s] usually busy, because people don’t want to cook.”
Many restaurants and retail places stay open for New Year’s Day. Calvert said it makes for good tips and an interesting crowd.
“People are hungover who come in, as well. So everyone just takes care of each other. And it’s chill for the most part,” Calvert said.
Other than that, it’s just a normal day at work. Same goes for the firefighters at Fire Station 3 in Spokane.
“We try to treat it like a normal day,” said Trevor Ashe, fire equipment operator, Spokane Fire Station 3.
Same 24-hour shift, as always.
“Emergencies still happen. They don’t take a day off for holidays, so we have to be here in case something happens,” Ashe said.
“We just want them to be safe and enjoy their holiday with their family,” said Cpl. Teresa Fuller, Spokane Police Department.
Giving up their holiday for us.
