Deputies arrest convicted felon who accidentally shot himself
SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Valley Deputies arrested a convicted felon early Tuesday morning after he accidentally shot himself in the leg.
At around 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, Spokane Valley Deputies responded to a report of a man who accidentally shot himself in the leg at a residence in the 6900 block of E. 2nd Avenue.
Deputies found 21-year-old Eric R. McGhee, a convicted felon who cannot legally posses a firearm, in the basement of the home. McGhee had a wound in his lower leg and was receiving first-aid from two other people. Responding deputies provided medical attention until Spokane Valley Fire and AMR personnel arrived.
McGhee claimed an unknown person had come downstairs, shot him in the leg, and then left with the gun.
During the investigation, a deputy found a Lorcin .380 pistol under a tarp on a picnic table in the backyard. The firearm’s serial number showed it had not been reported stolen. Deputies confirmed that McGhee had accidentally shot himself in the leg.
A check of McGhee’s criminal history revealed that he had previously been convicted of second degree Robbery and second degree Assault, both serious felonies which wouldn’t allow him to possess a firearm.
McGhee was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He was then booked into the Spokane County Jail for first degree Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
