Crews knock down brush fire near Nine Mile
Spokane County Fire crews say they have knocked down a half-acre wildfire burning near Riverside State Park.
The fire was first reported around 7:30 pm, a half mile from Rutter Parkway road in Nine Mile Falls, WA.
Within 15 minutes, fire crews were able to start digging a line around the fire and contain it to just a quarter acre.
“You don’t want to have anything smoldering, plant matter and duff can burn underneath the ground levels, so you want to make sure you are putting out not only what you see but what’s under the ground as well,” said Riverside State Park Ranger Audra Sims. “DNR and the fire district crews are well prepared and trained for doing that.”
Firefighting crews with the Department of Natural Resources were going to take command of the fire late Wednesday. Firefighters say they’ll continue to mop-up hot spots through the evening and into Thursday morning.
