Court docs: Murdered mom kicked boyfriend out of house days before her death
SPOKANE, Wash – While he has not yet been charged with a crime in connection with her murder, court documents show a murder victim’s estranged boyfriend is the man suspected of killing her.
Kassie Dewey was killed in her home Sunday. She was found in her garage with stab wounds, with two vehicles running nearby.
Her daughter was also stabbed, but survived her injuries.
Court documents say a man was also lying on the floor in the garage. He did not have any visible injuries, but was acting confused. Fire personnel believed that could be related to exhaust fumes.
The man’s name is written in court documents and is consistent with the name given to 4 News Now by the victim’s friends and family. 4 News Now is not naming him until he is arrested for the crime, but we do know he worked at Eastern State Hospital, along with the victim.
In a search warrant filed in Spokane Superior Court, police wrote that Dewey’s other two children were not at home at the time of the attack. They were staying with their dad in the Spokane Valley.
They got worried because their mom did not show up to pick them up. Their father drove them to their mom’s house and left. The children found the doors locked, but were able to climb in through a window. Police say the children noticed the house was in “disarray” which they thought was unusual. They tried to get into the unattached garage and could hear a car running, but they couldn’t get in and called 911.
The children told police their mother had been living with a man since June 2020. The children said the two constantly fight and that their mom had kicked him out two days before.
Police wrote in the search warrant that Dewey had received 100 text messages from the man on her phone the day before her murder.
“I was told that some of the text messages sent [by the man] were very disturbing,” the document said.
The search warrant was obtained in order for police to search the home. Police wrote that Dewey and her daughter were stabbed, so they were looking for weapons and any clothing belonging to the victims and the man found in the garage.
Police were also going to search the phones of both Dewey and the suspect. They were also looking for journals and voicemails that could give them more information about the nature of the relationship.
As of Thursday morning, the suspect was still in a Spokane hospital under the watch of Spokane Police.
