Cougars rally in eighth to take series-finale over Utah
SALT LAKE CITY —
Washington State broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the eighth inning and posted an 8-4 win over Utah in the series-finale at Smith’s Ballpark Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars received a solid outing from freshman righthander Brandon White who worked into the sixth, allowed two runs, scattered six hits and struck out four but received a no-decision. WSU received three-hit games from Danny Sinatro and Garrett Gouldsmith while Sinatro provided a two-run double in the eighth. Freshman reliever Zane Mills earned the win with 2.1 innings of work and Tyson Guerrero closed things out by striking out the final two hitters in the ninth. Guerrero also tripled in a run and scored while Collin Montez tripled and homered.
In the first, the Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Sinatro scored on a Dillon Plew fielder’s choice ground ball to shortstop. The Utes answered with a run in the bottom of the inning with a pair of doubles to tie the game at 1-1.
In the second, Guerrero reached on an error to start the inning, stole second and later scored on Gouldsmith’s RBI-single back up the middle. The Cougars added a run in the third after Sinatro singled back up the middle and Alavrez singled through the left side before Sinatro scored on a Kyle Manzardo sacrifice fly to left field for a 3-1 advantage.
Utah cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the fifth but the Cougars answered in the sixth. Collin Montez pulled a triple into right-centerfield and Guerrero followed with a triple of his own, nearly missing an opposite-field homer off the top of the wall, scoring Montez for a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, White exited after allowing a one-out single and sophomore reliever Michael Newstrom took over and get the final two outs to preserve the two-run advantage.
In the seventh, the Cougars received a pinch-hit single from Rob Teel who later moved around to third but was stranded to end the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Utah used a leadoff bunt single and back-to-back triples to right-center to tie the game at 4-4.
In the eighth, WSU loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a one-out infield single by Garrett Gouldsmith. The Cougars took a 5-4 lead as Jared Thurber worked a bases-loaded walk and Sinatro followed with a two-out two-run double the other way down the left field line for a 7-4 Cougar lead.
In the ninth, Montez hit a solo homer to right field to push the lead to 8-4. Utah put a runner on first with one out in the ninth, the Cougars brought in Guerrero who closed things out with a pair of strikeouts.
