Cougars drop series-opener to No. 1 UCLA 6-2
PULLMAN, Wash. —
Washington State dropped the series-opener to top-ranked UCLA 6-2 at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday evening.
The Cougars received a RBI-single from Dillon Plew, an RBI-sacrifice fly from Garrett Gouldsmith and Danny Sinatro singled, stole a base and scored a run. Tyson Guerrero beat out an infield single to extend his hitting streak to six games. WSU was held to five hits from UCLA starter Ryan Garcia who worked eight innings and struck out five.
In the first inning, UCLA led off the game with a home run to right field but the Cougars answered with a run in their half of the inning. Danny Sinatro beat out a chopped infield single, later stole second and scored after Dillon Plew singled back up the middle on the next pitch to even the game at 1-1.
In the second, the Bruins used a two-out RBI single to take a 2-1 lead but again WSU answered in their half of the inning. Tyson Guerrero led off the inning by beating out an infield single to second base, moved to second on a ground ball and moved to third on a passed ball before coming home on a Garrett Gouldsmith sacrifice fly to centerfield.
In the fourth, UCLA pushed three runs across all with two outs for a 5-2 advantage and added a run in the fifth for a 6-2 lead.
