Cooking With Mrs. Fred Porter

Cooking With Mrs. Fred Porter

10-years ago, Gary Garberg, one of the board members for the Hillyard Heritage Museum Society, 5022 N. Stone St., bought a simple pamplet from an employee for only $10. Inside that pamphlet were the secrets to Mrs. Fred Porter’s Chocolate Potato Cake and Betty Rell’s Pumpkin Cake. Garberg had bought the 1939 Hillyard Community Cookbook, an annual print from Empire Press.

He bought it in the nick of of time too. That employee was about to sell this cookbook (an inheritance from his Grandmother) to Pilot Books, located at 5016 N. Market St. He hopes to have the cookbook reprinted for the Hillyard Heritage Museum and even include new recipes from the community.
