Collaboration, community the focus of new Spokane cohousing development
SPOKANE, Wash. — One of Spokane’s oldest neighborhoods will soon be home to some of the most innovative housing options in the city.
Haystack Heights Cohousing promises the area’s first cohousing community. Mariah McKay, who is a co-owner, said there is a guiding principle to the new development.
“Life is better lived together,” McKay said.
That mantra has guided McKay and other co-owners as they develop the project. Haystack Heights, which will be located near E. Hartson Avenue and S. Garfield Street, will include a common house, shared green space and community garden. Units for sale range in size from flats to three bedroom townhouses.
“Everyone has their own private, fully equipped, fully furnished home. But, in addition to that, we have generous common amenities, including a common house,” McKay said.
The idea of sharing spaces and lifestyles is what makes cohousing unique.
“In cohousing, you know that you’re loved. You know that there is someone, not just one person, but many, that know you and care about you and are looking for you and are working with you to live our best possible lives together,” McKay said.
There is a new housing development coming to the #Spokane #Perry District. It’s unique in that it is cohousing, which is an intentional community of private homes clustered around shared space. #4NewsNow pic.twitter.com/jIEsmroHeI

The community will focus on sustainability, from ways of living to partly relying on power from solar panels.
McKay said they are working to get permits approved now and hope to break ground this fall.
Unit prices ranges from $200,000 to low $400,000, according to the Haystack Heights Cohousing website. Some units have already been claimed, but room is still available.
Learn more about the mission and lifestyle at Haystack Heights Cohousing by attending an informational meeting. McKay said one is scheduled for August 27 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The meeting will happen in the Haystack Heights Cohousing garden at 907 E. 8th Avenue.
