Coats 4 Kids: where and when to pick up your winter coats

You’ve handed your donations off to us and this week, they’ll be picked up by families in our community who need them the most. Our Coats 4 Kids distribution days are finally here, just in time for winter.

“There is a need. A big need for coats,” said Marlene Whitney, who’s volunteered for 20 years. “Even a hat or a pair of gloves are not very cheap now.”

Whitney even knit hats to pass out to families visiting the Northeast Community Center, one of this year’s Coats 4 Kids distribution centers.

“I think just to see the kids — how happy they are to have new coats and either a glove or a hat — they get so excited and once they get a coat on, you’re not taking it off — they’re going home with it,” said Whitney.

Spokane mom Tyra Bercier experienced Coats 4 Kids for the first time Monday at the community center. She browsed through racks of coats for her daughter, niece and nephew.

“There’s just racks and racks, full racks, and all different sizes from little babies to grown adults,” said Bercier. “With how expensive things are these days, it’s not easy to buy something that’s super warm.”
