The City of Spokane has narrowed the list of names suggested for the new pedestrian bicycle bridge to five.

The City asked for the public’s help in naming the new pedestrian bicycle bridge over the BNSF corridor that will connect the East Sprague area to the University District.

Construction on the bridge started earlier last year.

The City then narrowed the submissions down to the following:

1. University District Gateway Bridge

2. The Salish word for “Spokane Way”

3. The U Crossing

4. The U District Nexus

5. People’s Unity Bridge

Suggested names had to meet the following criteria:

-Nominees must have made an outstanding contribution to the City of Spokane.
-An individual or family must have been a resident of the City of Spokane.
-The duplication or repeat use of names will be avoided.
-Living political nominees must have retired from political office for at least five years.

According to the City, they were looking for names that would stand the test of time.
