City councilwoman criticized for not saying Pledge of Allegiance
SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane City Councilwoman Kate Burke was criticized this week for not reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
KXLY reached out to Burke Thursday afternoon, and she provided the following statement:
I absolutely love and believe in my country and our community, which has everything to do with why I chose to run for office.
I also believe and have respect for our Constitution, which calls for the separation of church and state. And I do not believe it is appropriate to do the Pledge of Allegiance from the dais of an official government meeting.
Burke was elected to the Spokane City Council seat in District 1 in November, 2017, filling the vacant seat left by Amber Waldref.
