Chiefs sweep season series with Victoria

Three goals in the second period and again in the third led the Spokane Chiefs to a 6-1 victory over the Victoria Royals Wednesday night in Victoria, B.C.

The win was the second straight for the Chiefs over the Royals in as many nights. Spokane went a perfect 4-0 against the Royals in the season series.

After a scoreless first period, the Chiefs would break out on top on Blake Gal’s 14th goal of the season from Steve Kuhn and Todd Fiddler at 6:31 of the second period. It was Gal’s second straight game with a goal against Victoria. Liam Stewart would score shorthanded from Kuhn and Brenden Kichton at 15:15 of the period to extend the lead to 2-0. Kichton would then cap a three goal second period with his 14th goal of the season at 16:41 from Gal and Corey Baldwin to give Spokane a 3-0 lead after two.

Stewart would get his second shorthanded goal of the night at 9:46 of the third period from Kuhn and Kichton to make it 4-0 Spokane. Mike Aviani’s 13th of the season from Marek Kalus at 11:44 would extend the lead to 5-0 Chiefs. Goalie Mac Engel’s bid for a shutout was spoiled on a Steven Hodges goal at 12:52 as the Royals cut the lead to 5-1. Spokane’s Dominick Uher would cap the scoring with his team leading 28th goal of the year at 16:44 from Connor Chartier and Darren Kramer. The Chiefs outshot the Royals 36-25 in the win.

Steve Kuhn finished with three assists, while Kichton had a goal and two helpers in the win. Blake Gal had a goal and an assist, while Engel had 24 saves in the victory.

Spokane will now travel to Prince George to play back to back games against the Cougars Friday and Saturday nights.
