Cheney Principal named 2020 Advocacy Champion of the Year
CHENEY, Wash. — The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) announced Westwood Middle School principal Dr. Erika Burden as the 2020 recipient of their annual Advocacy Champion honor.
The award recognizes school leaders for accomplishments aligned with advocacy goals of NASSP, including elevating the influence of school leaders in public discourse and participation in NASSAP events and campaigns.
“Dr. Burden has worked tirelessly to improve education across the country, and we are proud to recognize her as the 2020 NASSP Advocacy Champion of the Year,” stated NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti in a release. “She has made concerted efforts to develop lasting, meaningful relationships with her state lawmakers and has driven collective impact and changed the lives of her students.”
Dr. Burden’s accomplishments included campaigning for increased school safety measures, mental health and suicide prevention resources.
Additionally, the release described Dr. Burden as having an unwavering devotion to advocacy at the state and federal levels.
