Burning permits required in Idaho starting May 10

Burning permits required in Idaho starting May 10

Starting on May 10, Idahoans must obtain a fire safety burn permit from the Idaho Department of Lands before starting controlled burn activities.

The permit is free and good for ten days.

Idaho law requires anyone living in city limits in Idaho to obtain a permit during closed fire season if they want to burn anything. Closed fire season begins on May 10 and extends through October 20 every year.

Residents also are encouraged to contact their local city or rural fire department, because some cities or towns may require their own burn permit. You cannot obtain a permit in a district where a local burn ban is in effect.

The permits can be obtained online here, or in person at any IDL office in Idaho.
