Boston’s Marcus Smart receives Defensive Player of the Year Award from Gary Payton

BOSTON, Mass. — Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart was just given his Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award by Gary Payton.

Smart is the first guard to receive the award since Payton in the 1995-96 season.

On the season, Smart averaged 13 points, 5.7 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. In the 1995-96 season, Payton averaged 19.3 points, 7.5 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and a wild 2.9 steals per game.

Smart and the Celtics are currently playing the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoffs, having just stolen game one off of a Jayson Tatum buzzer-beater on Sunday.
