Bolinger named WCC Player of Month

Zags Renew Rivalry With UW

Gonzaga University baseball senior Royce Bolinger was named the Rawlings West Coast Conference Player of the Month for April, as announced by the league office Tuesday.

Bolinger garnered his first Rawlings WCC Player of the Month accolade after helping the Bulldogs to a 10-win month. He hit .400 (28-for-70) with four home runs, 13 RBI and scored 14 runs during April. Almost a third of Bolinger’s hits went for extra bases, as he smacked four doubles and a triple in addition to his four home runs. He also recorded 44 putouts, two assists and committed no errors in the outfield for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

The Scottsdale, Ariz., native opened the month going 4-for-5 with three runs driven in on back-to-back homers to lead Gonzaga to a 14-3 win over Pepperdine University in the WCC series finale.

Bolinger was a major contributor to Gonzaga’s two come-from-behind wins over in-state rival Washington State University. He went 3-for-4 with a triple and a RBI to lead the Bulldogs to a 9-3 win over the Cougars in the first meeting. In the second meeting, he hit a two-run double to help the Bulldogs erase a three-run deficit in the fourth inning and added another double and a single to lift the Zags to 7-4 victory over the Cougars.

In game two against Santa Clara University, Bolinger hit a three-run shot and recorded two more base hits to lead the Zags to an 8-3 win.

In the NCAA statistical rankings, Bolinger’s 77 base hits ranks 11th-best and his .399 batting average is the 16th-highest in the country. He’s slugged for a team-best .637 percentage with a .453 on-base percentage. He also leads the ballclub in doubles (12), home runs (10) and RBI (39).

The Bulldogs will welcome 19th-ranked Arizona State University to the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field for a three-game non-conference series over Commencement Weekend. The series begins Friday at 6 p.m.
