1911: Blues singer and guitarist Robert Johnson is born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. One of the biggest influences on popular music in the 20th century, he had little commercial success or public recognition in his lifetime. Because of his poorly documented life and early death at age 27 in August 1938, many legends have been spread about him, including the story that he gained his musical talent by selling his soul to the devil at a crossroads.
