Backpacks for Kids distribution underway at Salvation Army Spokane
SPOKANE, Wash. — The Salvation Army of Spokane is still giving away backpacks to kids, as of 3:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Families began lining up before sunrise Wednesday morning to pick up back to school supplies for their kids.
The annual Backpacks for Kids distribution is a partnership between the Salvation Army Spokane and Cenex Zip Trip stores. Through the month of July, they raised $55,000 so that 5,000 kids could go to school with a new backpack, filled with the supplies they need for a successful school year.
All day Wednesday, families are welcome to stop by the Salvation Army gym, located at 222 East Indiana Avenue. In order to pick one up, parents or guardians must bring their photo ID and proof of children living in their household (school registration, DSHS statement, medical card, school ID). As of noon Wednesday, they had given out over 1,000 backpacks.
Backpacks are organized by grade and there are options for both boys and girls. School supplies in each backpack are chosen based on grade requirements for local districts.
Backpacks for Kids distribution day also features a resource fair to get families ready for the school year ahead. Local organizations are on hand to help set families up for success. Free haircuts and lunch are also available.
