Backcountry avalanche warning issued for mountains in the Idaho Panhandle

Snow falls on a grey backdrop.

SANDPOINT, Idaho — The Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center issued a backcountry avalanche warning on Saturday for all mountain areas in the Idaho Panhandle.

The warning advises travelers to steer clear of backcountry areas in the Silver Valley, Lookout Pass, Selkirk and Cabinet mountains, and all mountains surrounding Troy and Libby, Montana. Travelers are also warned to stay away from mountains in the Kootenai area, as well as the Purcell mountains.

Friday’s heavy snowfall combined with wind makes for dangerous avalanche conditions, IPAC said.

The warning will remain in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday.
