Arleigh Ione Peterson
Arleigh Ione Peterson passed away at the Newport Nursing Home on September 11, 2019, at age 95.
She was born to Sydney and Lillian Lewis on January 12, 1924, in Palouse WA, the youngest of seven living children, the year the family immigrated from Webb, Sask. Canada.
The Lewis family then moved to Ione, WA in 1927 where Arleigh completed grade school. In 1937 the family moved to the Newport area, the year her father Sydney died. Arleigh went to Mead her freshman year of high school staying with sister Sarah. She finished high school in Newport in 1941. Upon graduating she worked at Newport’s Penny’s store and played the piano in a dance band during the war years.
Arleigh married Willard Peterson in Vancouver WA on 1-18-45. They lived in the same house in Old Town, ID most of their married life and had three children, Michael, Phillip and Gale. The house was always buzzing with activity with people coming in and out both the front and back doors where Arleigh was always ready with a cup of tea and a cookie and a smart remark. During the holidays they hosted parties and dinners for numerous friends and relatives.
Arleigh was always busy doing books for Willard’s garbage business; on the election board; and many UCC church activities–choir, business men’s lunches, coffee hours, and smorgasbords. She worked at Kimmels Drug for years with good friend Marie Knutson. One of her many talents was being a wordsmith, i.e. prolific letter writer, scrabble player, and crossword aficionado as well as playing cribbage and pinochle.
Arleigh was preceded in death by her parents, all her siblings and their spouses, her son Michael, and her husband Willard. She is survived by son Phillip and wife Rita Peterson and daughter Gale and husband Don Henrichs, as well as many grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at United Church of Christ on Sept. 27, 2019, at 11:00. Luncheon to Follow. Private burial at a later date. Sherman-Campbell Funeral and Cremation Services in Newport is in charge of arrangements. Family and friends are invited to sign the online guest book at shermancampbell.com.
