Authentic Argentinian empanadas are now available at Tarascon Empanadas in North Spokane.

Since immigrating to the United States in 2002, the Alvarez family has struggled to find Argentinian foods that they enjoyed so much back home; especially empanadas!

Earlier this year, the family decided to do something about it. Ari Alvarez, 21, had been working in notable Spokane kitchens and was eager to open a place of his own. A chance dinner with his parents, and sister at Mr. Wok led to the perfect situation.

The owner of Mr. Wok agreed to share his space with the family, as they learned the ropes to opening a business. Alvarez and his parents were frank about their concerns; not only about opening their first restaurant, but also the reception their beloved cuisine would get in the Inland Northwest.

Alvarez said that as they’ve traveled around the area, they had yet to find authentic Argentinian empanadas.

This spring, they launched a Kickstarter campaign and reached their goal. The family opened at 9222 North Newport Highway at the end of June. If the success of the Kickstarter campaign wasn’t indication enough, they sold 1,000 empanadas in their first week of business!

Here’s the menu for Tarascon Empanadas! Apparently the chimchurri fries are becoming more popular than the Empanadas! Don’t know how that possible because the chicken empanada was SO. GOOD. @kxly4news

They’ve got seven different empanadas to choose from. They range from chicken to ham and cheese to mushroom, and they are working on an eighth. Alvarez has also created his own version of chimichurri fries, “chimi fries,” that have almost become more popular than the empanadas!

You can visit the restaurant Sunday through Thursday, 11am to 8pm and Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 8:30pm.

They are located right near the North Division Y, in front of Home Depot.
