Alaska: Pets will be treated like children in divorce court

USA Today reports Alaska became the first state to require courts to “take into consideration the well-being of the animal” in divorce court proceedings.

In most of the United States, pets are considered the property of their owners rather than part of a family. The new law in Alaska means judges can assign joint custody of pets to couples, which is a decision that is beginning to be increasingly more common.
