Academy Awards could go hostless following unsuccessful search
LOS ANGELES — The 2019 Oscars are just six weeks away, and the Academy still has not found a host. Entertainment magazine Variety is reporting they’ve stopped looking for one.
“No A-lister wants to host the Oscars at this point. There’s nothing in it for them,” said Variety editor Michael Schneider.
Just hours after being selected to host last month, comedian Kevin Hart bowed out following controversy over years-old homophobic tweets.
Variety reports the plan for now, is to have the show’s segments and sketches introduced by multiple Hollywood stars, though they say there is a chance a host could be chosen at the last minute.
This would be the first host-less Academy Awards show in three decades.
“The last time there wasn’t a host one on the Oscars was in 1989 and that show is remembered as one of the biggest debacles in Oscar history as it opened with a huge musical number, including infamously Rob Lowe singing a song with Snow White,” Schneider said.
