A new study by University of Rochester researchers shows that drinking a few glasses of wine a day helps keep your brain clean from waste.

The study, which was published in the Scientific Reports journal, shows how a few glasses of wine a day can help clean your brain. While chronic alcoholism is linked to poor health, small doses of alcohol can be beneficial to brain health.

“Prolonged intake of excessive amounts of ethanol is known to have adverse effects on the central nervous system,” said Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc., co-director of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and lead author of the study. “However, in this study we have shown for the first time that low doses of alcohol are potentially beneficial to brain health, namely it improves the brain’s ability to remove waste.”

According to the study, heavy amounts of alcohol for prolonged periods of time greatly increases the risk of developing dementia, but low and moderate intakes of alcohol have also been shown to reduce the risk of dementia.
