7-year-old Labrador Retriever recovering after being shot in the leg in Yakima
YAKIMA, Wash. — On Jan. 12, Leah Toney let her 7-year-old Labrador Retriever run around her dad’s backyard in West Valley. When he came back inside, she discovered a heartbreaking injury. He had been shot in the leg.
The 7-year-old dog, better known as ‘The Dude,’ has always enjoyed running freely and has never bothered anyone, which is why Toney is in shock that someone would want to harm her pet.
“It was just really sad to see him in pain because he’s never hurt anybody,” said Toney.
The Dude was taken to a local veterinary hospital in Yakima. After testing, the family drove to Washington State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. He needed surgery to save his leg.
“It took a pin, a plate and seven screws to repair his leg,” said Toney.
The surgery took nearly five hours, but it seemed like an eternity for Toney.
She did report the incident to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office. According to Toney, the YCSO can’t do much because they don’t know who shot The Dude.
Toney has started a GoFundMe Page to help pay for The Dude’s medical bills and the medication he’ll be taking for the next few months.
He’s expected to make a full recovery.
