1,250 students graduate from Gonzaga on Mother’s Day
SPOKANE, Wash. — Talk about the best Mother’s Day present ever.
Thousands of parents packed into the Spokane Arena on Sunday afternoon to watch their kids get their diplomas at Gonzaga’s 126th commencement ceremony — which fell on Mother’s Day. The accomplishment was just as exciting for the graduates as it was for those who helped them get there.
“My mom is one of my best friends. I could not have gotten through the last four years, let alone my whole life without her,” said Taylor Tyrell, who graduated Sunday with her BA in classical civilizations. “She’s just been my rock and my biggest supporter and I don’t know what I would do without her, so I think it’s pretty fitting that graduation is on Mother’s Day.”
Her mom Elyse, a GU law graduate herself, couldn’t agree more.
“It was the best feeling, the best Mother’s Day gift I could get,” said Elyse. “Very heartwarming to know, to see something that you’ve worked so hard to help create do such great things with herself. So it’s, like I said, the best present ever.”
It’s the gift that keeps on giving, as Taylor takes her next steps toward becoming a professor to shape the lives of another class of graduates.
“She is ambitious, strong, determined, kindhearted, anything she puts her mind to, she can do,” Elyse said. “Couldn’t be prouder.”
