SPOKANE, Wash. - VIDEO: Mariners draft UHigh, Gonzaga LHP Tyler Olson

Gonzaga University senior pitcher Tyler Olson was drafted in seventh round by the Seattle Mariners Friday in the second day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

The Spokane, Wash., native was the 207th overall selection and the seventh player drafted by the Mariners. Olson is the second Zag to be picked in the draft. Junior Marco Gonzales was a first round selection of the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday.

"We are very proud and excited for Tyler," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We were excited when he decided to return to us and fulfill his goal of winning a WCC championship. With that goal realized, he bolstered his draft stock and this is a great accomplishment for a local guy. We wish him the best of luck with the Mariners."

Olson returned to the Bulldogs for a fifth-season after getting drafted by the Oakland Athletics a year ago. The lefty was the 11th choice of the 17th round for the A's.

However, Olson's decision to return to the Bulldogs paid dividends as the left-handed hurler was sensational. Named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, Olson went 9-4 with a 2.48 ERA in 101.2 innings. He led the Bulldogs in wins, ERA and complete games (5) while finishing in the top five of all WCC pitchers in wins, innings, strikeouts and complete games.

Olson was incredibly effective during the month of April when he went 4-0 with a 0.52 ERA. Of his four starts, three were complete games and one was a shutout. During that stretch, Olson had a 19-inning scoreless streak.

The MLB Draft continues Saturday with rounds 10 through 40 on
