VIDEO: Indians win on Independence Day
In front of a sold-out crowd of 7,027, the Spokane Indians used an offensive eruption in the bottom half of the seventh inning to earn a 10-3 victory - the team's fifth in as many days - over the Eugene Emeralds on 4th of July Fireworks Night presented by NAPA Auto Parts, KISS 98.1, 590 KQNT and The Inlander.
With the Indians down 3-2, Spokane came out in the seventh inning and loaded the bases with one out. After two walks and a sac fly that plated two runs, Janluis Castro and Cam Schiller hit back-to-back singles to give Spokane a commanding 8-3 lead.
Spokane collected 10 hits on the night, including three by catcher Kevin Torres who pushed his batting average up to .280. Christopher Garia continued his hitting tear as well, belting a double in one of his two hits. Barrett Serrato and Alberto Truinfel had three and two RBI, respectively.
RHP Sam Wolff (1-0) earned his first win of the season as he tossed 2 scoreless innings. Wolff is the only Spokane pitcher who has yet to allow a run this season.
Indians starting pitcher Kelvin Vasquez started off strong, keeping any Emeralds from scoring in the first two innings. But his luck changed in the third as he allowed one run after Trae Santos hit a single to left field. He allowed two more runs, leaving after four innings, and was relieved by RHP Abel De Los Santos.
The Indians' defense was strong as well on Independence Day, as Torres showed strength behind the plate, throwing out three runners attempting to steal second base. Spokane also committed no team errors.
