The Empire has signed defensive back Robert Brown to their 2017 IFL roster.
Brown (DB, 5-10, 175, Union) rejoins the Empire for his fourth IFL season and second in Spokane. Last season, Robert earned First Team All-IFL honors after competing in all 16 regular season games for the Empire. He led the team with 104 total tackles (ranked sixth in IFL) and seven interceptions (tied second in IFL). On special teams, Robert recorded 17 kick returns for 262 yards (15.4 yards per return).
In 12 games during the 2015 season with the Cedar Rapid Titans, Brown led the IFL with nine missed field goal returns for 268 yards and one touchdown while adding 30 kick returns for 561 yards and two scores. On defense, he recorded 31 total tackles, one interception, and five pass break-ups. During his rookie season in 2014, Brown played in 11 games and tallied 27 total tackles, one interception, two pass break-ups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He also added 39 kick returns for 758 yards and two touchdowns.
Brown played his collegiate career at Union College (KY) where he recorded 182 total tackles, ten tackles for loss, nine interceptions, eight blocked kicks, and six forced fumbles. He is originally from Daytona, Florida.
“Robert provided a spark to our defense that is hard to find, and he was a huge part of our success last season,” said Empire Head Coach Adam Shackleford. “He is not only one of the best cover guys in the league, but he can also hurt you on special teams as a return man. We’re looking forward to having his leadership, confidence, and edge back in 2017.”
