The Shadle Park Highlanders opened the 2012 GSL football season with a 37-22 win over Rogers on Thursday night at Joe Albi Stadium.
Shadle Park (1-0) jumped out to a 15-0 first quarter lead thanks to two touchdown passes by sophomore quarterback Brett Rypien. Rogers (0-1) answered before the end of the quarter with an 80 yard touchdown run from senior running back Luke Rogers. After a scoreless and penalty marred second quarter, the Highlanders entered halftime with a 15-8 lead.
Rogers would take it's first lead in the third quarter when senior running back Anthony Hampton broke free for a 31 yard touchdown run. But Shadle responded almost immediately, with Rypien capping off the drive by connecting with Cam Babcock for a 14 yard score on a screen play. The Highlanders would add to their lead when Stanley Renz scored on a one yard run in the fourth quarter.
