LUBBOCK, Texas (June 29, 2013 – www.gozags.com) – Former Gonzaga University star pitcher and first baseman Marco Gonzales claimed the 2013 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award as announced by the College Baseball Foundation. Gonzales will accept the award at College Baseball's Night of Champions ceremony Saturday night in Lubbock, Texas.
"I am extremely honored to accept such a prestigious award," Gonzales said. "This means the world to me and my family. I want to thank my coaches and teammates for believing in me and for giving me the chance to be on the field every day. This is simply a testament of my support group and how important they are to me and my passion for the game of baseball."
Gonzales edged out Mike Ford of Princeton University and Michael Lorenzen of Cal State Fullerton for the award that honors the player who excelled both on the mound and in the field
The Fort Collins, Colo., native turned in a spectacular season for the Bulldogs. The left-handed pitcher earned Co-West Coast Conference Player of the Year honors with his 7-3 record and 2.80 ERA. In 106 innings, Gonzales struck out 96 batters while only walking 25. The southpaw had two complete game shutouts including a stellar effort over Mar. 1 over No. 2 Arkansas in Surprise, Ariz.
Gonzales also served as a middle of the lineup bat for the Zags offense as he led the club with a .311 batting average, two home runs and 26 RBI. The lefty hit .325 in conference play and totaled 11 multiple hit games. From April 16 to May 4, Gonzales carried a hitting streak that spanned 11 games.
The All-American was the first-round selection of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. Gonzales was the 19th overall pick to become the highest drafted player in Gonzaga history.
Gonzales becomes the fourth recipient of the award since it was first presented in 2010. The former winners include Brian Johnson from University of Florida (2012), Danny Hultzen from University of Virginia (2011) and Mike McGee from Florida State University (2010).
The John Olerud Award was announced in conjunction with several prestigious college baseball awards including the Brooks Wallace Award, The Johnny Bench Award, National Pitcher of the Year and the Dick Howser Trophy.
