SPOKANE, Wash. -

Backed by Tyler Olson’s second consecutive complete game, the Gonzaga University baseball team took game two of its three game series against BYU 5-1 Friday night at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. Olson (8-2), who shutout Pepperdine University in his last start, scattered seven hits in the game while striking out five with no walks.

The Zags claim its sixth West Coast Conference series and improve to 28-13-1 overall and 15-5 in league. BYU drops to 20-17 overall and 7-7 WCC.

The star of the night was Olson who cruised through the Cougars. The first BYU hit did not come until the third inning and the Cougars just managed one multi-hit inning.

The Bulldogs offense scored the first run of the game on a Caleb Wood bases loaded RBI through the right side.

Gonzaga added two more runs in each the fifth and sixth innings to distance themselves from BYU.

In the fifth, a Mitchell Gunsolus bases loaded ground out scored Alex Bonczyk. Immediately after, Wood picked up his second RBI of the game hit a base knock to left field.

Bonczyk was also involved with the two runs in the sixth. Clayton Eslick singled with one out to bring up Bonczyk who connected for his first home run in a Bulldog uniform. Through six, Gonzaga help a 5-0 lead.

Olson handled business for the rest of the game. Cougar Jaycob Brugman hit a solo home run to right field in the seventh but BYU would not threaten the Zags lead.

The Bulldogs out-hit BYU 11 to 7 with Wood and Bonczyk having a couple apiece.

The Zags will go for the series sweep Saturday as the two teams conclude their WCC set at 1 p.m.
